The acronym “FIGA” in Russian stands for “Films Historical Heroic Artistic”. The film studio with such an exotic name has been working in the squadron since 1964. Sometimes this acronym was interpreted as an answer to numerous skeptics, who said “You won’t be able to do anything!” (Note: in colloquial Russian FIGA means that you won’t be able to do anything). “We will!” – answered “Carabela” members and produced a new film.

The first films of the studio were shot on the 8-millimetre film, and a little bit later (in 70s and 80s) the 16-millimetre film started to be used. Before video cameras appeared all the films produced by “FIGA” were silent.

During these years seventy (!) documentary and live-action films have been shot. Among them the most famous are: “Father’s Wrath”, “Know-nothing’s Adventures”, “Robin Hood”, “There Lived Drummers”, “Mannequin Vaska”, “Little Goalkeeper Chip”, “Three Musketeers”, “The Toy Ship or Captain Sanka’s Chronicle”, “Treasure Island”, “Redskins’ Chief”, “A Tale about the Boys from the Cardboard Town”, “Aquiline Steep”, “A Legend about a Unicorn”.

In the middle of 80s one of the subdivisions of the film studio was “RIO BRAVO” group, who shot a series of action films about the adventures of a special agent Gugutse. The notable thing is that some of the participants of the shooting connected their future professions with working in Special Forces and bodies of FSS (Federal Service of Safety).

The main peculiarity of the studio’s films is the maximum participation of children and adolescents in producing them: taking part in the screen script development, shooting, editing, dubbing. The roles in the studio are chosen according to the characteristic features of every participant’s personality during the development of the script. One more specific feature of the squadron’s film studio is the fact that in all the live-action films there are always mass scenes, where the maximum of children from the squadron take part.

In 2001, for the 40th anniversary of “Carabela” an artistic video film “One More Cinderella Tale” was shot. It was shown for the first time on the 7th of July, 2001 in the hall of the Ural State Technical University, where the celebration of the 40th birthday of the squadron was held. After the first show the great ovation of the overcrowded hall and the speech of the author of the literary script and the commodore of the “Carabela” squadron V.P. Krapivin was the highest appreciation of the film crew, which consisted of all the children of the basic staff, parents and many graduates.

A writer Vladislav Krapivin noted that for the first time he saw a film that was based on his work and was maximally close to the original.

Today “One More Cinderella Tale” is the greatest project of our film studio. It became a laureate of the children film festival of the All-Russia children centre “Orlyonok”, got a diploma on the film festival “Moskovskiye Kanikuly” (“Moscow Holidays”) and a special prize of the Government of Moscow on the international festival “Mir Glazami Detey” (“The World with Children’s Eyes”).

The latest artistic video film – “The Planet” was shot by the studio and based on V.P. Krapivin’s story “There was such a Planet” in 2003.

A meticulous critic evaluating our films should take into account that the main thing in the press-centre and sailing fleet “Carabela” is not film-making, but the educational process, where shooting, dubbing and editing of films are just a means of upbringing. That is why the programmes of the film studio occupy only a small part in the activity of the squadron. It is connected with the fact that besides getting familiar with the actor’s profession, children in “Carabela” build yachts, master sailing, do sports fencing, issue a literary miscellany and prepare a lot of journalistic materials for regional and all-Russia editions.
