«In front of Carabela’s banners…»

Admission to pioneers. Artist Evgenia Medvedeva.

Since 1965, when Carabela Squadron received an official status of a separate experimental squad, and therefore the right to admit children to the ranks of the pioneer organization without any participation of the school, and up to 1991, when the All-Union Pioneer Organization ceased to exist, there have never been any doubts in the squad how to enroll newcomers to the ranks of Carabelans.

For the next ten years on there was no solemn procedure on the agenda. A candidate was given a uniform just after decision-making by the Board of Commanders to close the probationary period. Often the issue of the Pioneer tie, as a uniform element was discussed. The guys from the squad during the dashing 90-ies had to defend the honor of the uniform with their fists. But how to enroll children in the ranks of the squad was not an issue until the early 2000s.

After much debate and various proposals it was decided to introduce a procedure for the ceremonial initiation of newcomers into the ranks of Carabelans. Nowadays the solemn part of the procedure is thought over to the smallest detail:

initiation is carried out during a separate stage of the general gathering, which precedes the main part of the assembly;

a young candidate who decided to join Carabela Squadron is to be approved by the decision of the Board of Commanders;

the decision is made by open voting of the majority;

approved candidates read out an oath, saying their name in front of the banner of the press center and the Carabela sailing flotilla;

after pronouncing the oath the candidate is tied with a necktie of the squad (red triangle with a blue border on two sides) by the representative of the first team or  a Carabela veteran.

The ordination gathering is held by Detachment Commander or an instructor, acting head of Carabela. At the gathering all four banners of the press centre and sailing flotilla are to be brought of a group of six people. Upon the procedure of ordination a new representative of the first team is issued an asterisk for the beret as proof of successful completion of the probationary period.

The very procedure of ordination to the squad takes place in the following sequence:

  • after bringing of the banners two instructors stand to the left of the banner group;
  • then the master of the ceremony commands: “The candidates are invited to the banners …!”, and the Commander of the Banner Group commands – “Attention!”;
  • then the candidate down on the right knee utters the oath;• the master of the ceremony commands “At ease!” and then: “The tie is tied by …!”;
  • the candidate hearing the command, kneels up and turns to the left;
  • the representative of the first team comes over to instructors holding the ceremony of ordination, takes a tie and ties it around the neck of the candidate ordinate, shakes his hand as a greeting, and returns to the line;
  • next the approved newcomer approaches the instructors to take elements of the  uniform and to accept congratulations, and then gets back into the line.

After the dedication of all the candidates, the banner group takes the banners away until the beginning of the main part of the total assembly. Now an ordination gathering is the most exciting time in the life of any Carabelan!

Text of the oath:

I, (name, surname) before the banners of Carabela solemnly swear:

- to comply with the Statute and laws of the squad;

- to proudly wear the uniform and insignia of the press center and the sailing flotilla;

- not to abandon the squadron without warning or in difficult times;

- to keep in mind that the principle of the squadron  life is: “One for all and all for one!”

By the way, the choice of the person who ties a necktie is a very responsible job, because that is a Carabelan who becomes your curator and guide in everyday squadron life! Such a decision cannot be taken at the last moment, the more so, your choice should be approved by the Board of Commanders.
